ABOS Past Presidents Panel

Join 3 of our association’s past presidents for this unprogram & panel discussion where you can learn about the association and the take the opportunity to talk with past ABOS leaders with over 40 years of Outreach experience between them.

Ann Plazek is the Immediate Past President of ABOS and the Outreach Services Manager for Medina County District Library.  The department of 7 provides bookmobile service, home delivery to 160 individuals a month, day care visits, an early literacy program at the jail, deposit collections and pop up libraries.  Ann began working in libraries as a page at the age of 14 and worked on the bookmobile during the summer in High School and college before working as a children’s librarian.

Marianne Thompson is celebrating 40 years as a professional librarian this year. Her first job was with the La Crosse Public Library (WI) as an Extension Services Librarian (Outreach) in 1978, where she worked on a Bookmobile! She has also worked as a Patient Librarian, a system reference librarian (IA), and as the manager of Information Services (IL). In 2006, while working as the Information Services manager, she took on a dual role as Outreach Services

Manager at Fountaindale Public Library (IL). The service has more than doubled under her 12 years as the Outreach manager. ABOS conferences are an energizing force for her and she always takes back new ideas to try for her service. In 2012 Marianne joined the ABOS Board.  She served as the ABOS President in 2016.

Don Thompson is experienced and knowledgeable in the manufacturing and construction industries. Don has always love figuring out how things work. Don’s background in the industrial management and mechanical contracting gives him a valuable insight into how to best construct (or deconstruct) a product. Many of the ACORE products, Don has crafted based on needs and ideas from bookmobile and outreach staff asking “What if? And Can you make?”


Advocating Within

Learn how Richland Library's outreach librarians successfully advocated within their organization and received support from library leadership to expand service offerings through the use of specialized outreach vehicles. Including specific tips and strategies you can use to present your goals to library administration.


Georgia Coleman, a leader in the use of human-centered design in public libraries, is a champion for library services that enhance community connectedness and quality of life. She currently serves as Chief Customer Officer at the award-winning Richland Library in Columbia, SC, where she is responsible for public services and customer experience throughout the library’s twelve locations.

Georgia was named an American Library Association Emerging Leader in 2008 and received Richland Library’s highest honor, the Helen Ann Rawlinson Leadership Award, in 2016. In her spare time, she enjoys knitting, supporting Girls Rock Columbia, and spending time with her husband and son.


Amy Schofield has served as the Community Outreach manager at Richland Library since 2015.  During her tenure, Amy has worked with the Outreach Department to provide early literacy workshops for low income families, create educational programs at adult and juvenile detention centers, support literacy efforts among Spanish speaking families, provide services to homebound seniors, and develop services for the Learn Freely Bus--- a 39' RV equipped with materials, technology and programming space.  During her tenure as Director of the Kershaw County Library (2008-2015) she helped support outreach efforts to low income areas of the community, childcare centers, and rural areas.


Bling my Ride! Engage your patrons with passive programs and unique displays

Faced with limited space for programming and browsing, Arapahoe Libraries created innovative tools to engage our patrons on bookmobile and lobby stops.  At this session you’ll see unique passive programs, displays and merchandising. Learn how you can make these changes to enrich your patrons’ experience.


Richard Lyda supervises Mobile Library Services for Arapahoe Libraries. He has been working to provide library access to isolated populations since joining Arapahoe Libraries as an Outreach Librarian in 2008. In 2013, Richard was recognized as a Mover and Shaker by the library journal for his work as a community builder. Richard is passionate about bringing high quality library services to the underserved at their point of need.


Karen Bradley has been the Mobile Library Services Librarian with Arapahoe Libraries since 2014. In that time she has focused on customer service, creative community participation, and building new library relationships.



The Bookmobile Buzz (or lack thereof)

The newest generation of outreach vehicles are creating quite a buzz, but in a very quiet way! Vehicle designs, features and technologies are improving faster than ever, and recent industry breakthroughs are set to change the way libraries deliver mobile services. Join bookmobile consultant Michael Swendrowski of Specialty Vehicle Services, LLC as he shares the latest trends and updates to help you improve your next project and makes 1 (or 2) major industry announcements that are sure to change the way you think about bookmobiles… forever (spoiler alert - generators have met their match)!


Michael Swendrowski is president of Specialty Vehicle Services, an independent consulting firm dedicated to specialty vehicles since 2002. In addition to serving his clients, Michael has a special passion for library outreach and has been honored to serve as Chairman of the American Library Association's ("ALA") Subcommittee on Bookmobiles, a Board Member of the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services ("ABOS"), and co-author of On the Road to Outreach (Libraries Unlimited, 2009). Michael also spearheaded "National Bookmobile Day" and frequently addresses local and national media in his efforts to raise awareness for these beloved vehicles and services.



Bookmobiles Start your Engines

Join Mike and Kathy (no they’re not WBKM radio hosts) but they are Bookmobile drivers with experience in vehicle maintenance and safety. This interactive program, held on a bookmobile provided by Matthews Specialty Vehicles, will give attendees the opportunity to learn:

• Pre/post trip inspections

• Driver safety tips

• What you need in your tool box

• Identification of various vehicle components

• Short & long term maintenance tips

• How to recognize possible maintenance issues beyond the PMI

• And, the #1 maintenance issue from the listserv…the Generator!

This is a great program for people with all levels of experience who love hands on learning!


Mike Pracht is the senior Bookmobile Driver and the Outreach Services Safety Officer for the Aurora Public Library. Mike has over 30 years’ experience with the operation and maintenance of a variety of vehicles…everything from bookmobiles to trucks to bobcats. By far, driving a bookmobile has been the most rewarding.


Kathy Welko is the Outreach Services Assistant Manager at the Fountaindale Public Library. She supervises five Bookmobile drivers. Kathy has created an Outreach Procedures Manual that has specific safety and mechanical procedures that staff must follow. Kathy has recently completed her MLIS in Library Science from Dominican University in Illinois. 





Bringing Outreach Data to a New Level [BOIR Project]



The Association for Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS) is developing the "Bookmobile and Outreach Information Repository". The aim of this project is to archive, unify, and further bookmobile and library Outreach services worldwide with a multipurpose database tool. Libraries worldwide have been providing bookmobile and Outreach services to their communities for hundreds of years and continue to be a critical link connecting underserved populations to books, computers, another other resources that promote early childhood literacy, lifelong learning, and community enrichment.


Tina Williams, current President of ABOS and Outreach Services Manager at the White Oak Library District (IL), Tina has worked in public libraries for over 29 years, in departments ranging from administration to public services to Outreach. She has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from DeVry University & a Master of Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Tina is the co-founder/co-chair of the Illinois Serving Patrons with Dementia Group & Secretary of the RAILS Bookmobile and Library Outreach Networking Group (B'LONG). She is a new LTA teacher for her local community college, writes her own blog (https://tinaheretohelp.com), and mentors librarians.


Cathy Zimmerman is a Board Member & BOIR Project Finance Sub-Committee Chair, LRP committee member, and Conference Bookmobile Wrangler for ABOS. She’s worked in Outreach with the Scott County Library for 13 years as the Bookmobile Associate with duties to homebound and senior living facilities. Cathy holds a Bachelor degree in Music Education (K-12) from the University of Dubuque and a Master’s degree from North Texas State in Musicology. Cathy was the Alumni Director at the University of Dubuque, served as the Executive Director of the March of Dimes and was a production editor for Carlisle Communications.




Community Listening

In 2018, following feedback from patrons and staff emphasizing the importance of inclusivity to the future of the organization, Arapahoe Libraries created a new position. Our Inclusive Outreach Specialist performs targeted community listening internally and externally which is then used to make suggestions about how our programming and services can be made more accessible to our communities. The position is housed with Mobile Library Services and works closely with MLS staff to develop goals and pilot new initiatives. Come learn about what Arapahoe Libraries is doing to address inclusivity concerns and how that work dovetails with bookmobile and outreach services.


Elena Cabodevilla (she/her/hers) holds bachelor's degrees in gender and women's studies, Spanish, and sociology and a master's degree in counseling with a multicultural emphasis. She worked for Arapahoe Libraries for three years at Sheridan Library before accepting the newly created Inclusive Outreach Specialist position. Elena is deeply grateful to the staff and patron communities at Sheridan Library for helping to inform her first year in an exciting new role. Elena likes reading, live music, yarn crafts, coffee, and learning new things.



Delivering on Early Literacy; Mobile Preschool Services

Marin County was recently recognized as the most inequitable county in the state of California. In an effort to level the playing field for children who live in rural and poor parts of our county, the Marin County Free Library provides early literacy services aboard our mobile preschool, the FLAGship. This program is vital to many families who have no other way to prepare their babies and toddlers for academic success, but our bus is now 17 years old. Major systems have been failing, stranding the staff and bus in remote locations. We're now in the process of replacing FLAGship - an exciting process! We'll discuss our library early literacy program with a slideshow demonstrating the breadth of services we offer and the interesting locales we serve, including remote dairy ranches in West Marin. We'll also discuss what we have in mind as we build a new mobile preschool.


Bonny White, branch manager of the West Marin Libraries, also manages the FLAGship program. Bonny has been in her position for 10 years. FLAGship coordinator, Allie Cruz, has been managing the program for over a year. Previously, she was a preschool teacher with Bright Horizons


Driving Literacy Home

We were looking to connect with students in a new-fangled, old-fashioned way. So we built a bookmobile--no, make that a Mobile Book Center. Within a few months, we flipped our summer outreach from books in trunks to a full size bus loaded with books. Our MBC is dedicated to combating summer slide by providing equitable access to books and food resources (for summer 2018) for our English Language Learners, students living in poverty and preschool students.


Come learn how we pulled together grants, donations, business partnerships, public library partnerships, volunteers and administrative support to battle summer slide in our community.


Amy Price is a 21 year veteran of Princeton City School District. As the District Library Media Specialist, Amy has experience working with preK-12th graders as she directs the vision of the district library program. 

Tricia Roddy has been with Princeton City School District for nine years, eight of them in elementary libraries, as a Media Paraprofessional. She currently is the Director of Marketing, Communications and Grant Writing for Princeton City School District. Follow us @Viking_Media and @PrincetonMBC



Experience the Matthews Difference! Bookmobiles by Matthews Specialty Vehicles

Dennis Hoag is the director of global sales with almost thirty years of experience in this field. He graduated from Dansville Central Schools, Dansville, New York. He attended college courses from Genesee Community College, Genesee, New York in Management and Marketing. He spent five years with Babcock Enterprises in Dansville, New York, with duties including Estimating, Sales and Managing production. Mr. Hoag has been employed by Matthews Specialty Vehicles, Inc. for the past twenty-six years. Responsibilities include managing a sales team for twelve different product lines, as well as yearly budgeting and cost analysis for sales. He reports directly to the President. Mr. Hoag resides in High Point, NC.


A Gaze Into the Future of Mobile Outreach

How might mobile outreach operate in the future? This will be followed by a discussion with the attendees, and lastly, a question and answer time.


Martin Marek is a graduate of Kent State University with a Bachelor of Business Degree and a major of Transportation Management. He has been involved in vehicle building his whole career as an Office Manager, Purchasing Agent, business owner, and Director of Marketing. Martin has been with Farber Specialty Vehicles for twenty-five years.



Get the Facts About CDLs

Bigger, better bookmobiles allow for growth in outreach services – but often require drivers to have a CDL (commercial driver’s license). What are the pros and cons of CDLs? This presentation will cover a variety of CDL topics that can affect outreach services, including insights on training, personal liabilities, vehicle operations, and required documentation. Additionally, federal requirements such as drug and alcohol testing will be reviewed.

Michelle Stottlemire comes to outreach services from an eclectic background which includes university housing, property management, and museum education. For the past 8 years she has traveled the roads as a bookmobile jockey at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 2016 Library of the Year recipient from Library Journal. She absolutely loves working in these “mobile branches” and believes they are a critical part of providing library services to all residents.


An Introduction to ALA’s Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services and its Resources

The Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS) within the ALA works to provide resources surrounding the topic of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. In this presentation, Amber Hayes, Outreach and Communications Program Officer for ODLOS, will outline resources that are available for your library. This session will highlight outreach toolkits that equip you with data and references to ensure that your library is serving all audiences. This presentation will also give a history of National Bookmobile Day and how your library can get involved in 2019.  

Amber Hayes is a former ESL teacher and has experience working with adult learners and international audiences. She is the Outreach and Communications Program Officer within ODLOS (Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services). She coordinates communications for ODLOS and works with members to develop and promote outreach materials. She is also the staff Liaison to the Committee on Rural, Native, and Tribal Libraries of All Kinds (RNTLOAK); the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS); and the Association of Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL).


Just One Thing

Increase community engagement with buy-in from your staff in your service area! Learn how one library went from doing 20 outreach events a year to 150 by empowering staff to engage with the community. Increase staff confidence as marketers with the concept of sharing “just one thing” about the library. The presenters will share tips and tricks for designing your own vehicle and expand programming outside the walls.


Dr. Rachel Hadidi is a Community Outreach Librarian for Plano Public Library. She works on the Marketing and Outreach team and helps coordinate outreach events, conference presentations, social media, and grants.




Keeping Bookmobiles and Mobile Services Relevant During Times of Change

In 2014, the St. Louis County Library system began its capital improvement plan to renovate buildings and enhance services. During this time of change, Outreach staff seized the opportunity to evaluate their services, procedures, and workflow. Manager of the Bookmobiles and Mobile Services’ at SLCL, Crystal Harris, will discuss several topics related to her department's ongoing efforts to remain engaging and relevant to their community during times of change and after. Topics include revamping services, retraining staff, and updating procedures.

Crystal Harris is the Manager of the Bookmobiles and Mobile Services Department of the St. Louis COunty Library. She was the Manager at the Natural Bridge Branch and the Adult Programmer for the St. Louis Public Library in St. Louis, MO. Crustal earned her MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Crystal loves a good romance novel and since becoming the manager, has now mastered the skills of replacing and repairing big vehicles.


Large Print: One Solution for youth AND seniors!

We’ll take a look at the Senior Book Group program and using Large Print to expand the reach of your book group offerings in your community. Did you know that you can use Large Print with striving and struggling Young Readers? We’ll focus on how Large Print benefits these community segments.

Lisa Marie Joyce is an Acquisitions Editor at Thorndike Press and the Outreach Librarian at the South Portland Maine Public Library. Lisa was the Outreach Librarian at the Portland Maine Public Library for 25 years. She has a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Maine and an MLIS from Simmons College. While at Portland Public she developed the README Summer Reading program for adults for the State of Maine.


Little Free Libraries = Community Outreach

Little Free Libraries have been around for awhile, but what is new for Salina Public Library is how we have developed a way to use Little Free LIbraries to engage the community in a variety of ways. Learn how we’ve partnered with the City of Salina in finding homes for our Little Free Libraries, the woodworkers who built them, and the library enthusiasts who have adopted them. Hear stories from those who use the Little Free Libraries, and how neighbors are working together for the Little Free Library cause.


Lori Berezovsky was the original outreach librarian at Salina Public Library 10 years ago, and continues to grow in the job, building new services, partnerships, and connections between the library and the community.



Meet Them Where They Are: A Mobile Library for the 21st Century

It’s one thing to say you’re going to build a modern, flexible library on wheels. It’s another to actually do it. The Circulator is more like a food truck than a bookmobile, and it's Chapel Hill Public Library's way to increase community access to CHPL, engage new audiences, and serve as a mobile extension of its brand.


Susan Brown took her first library job to earn beer money while in college, never thinking it would turn into a career.  After several years in academic and government libraries, she found her home at a public library. In 2013, she returned to the “Southern Part of Heaven” to become the Director of Chapel Hill Public Library.  Before that, she was Marketing Director at Lawrence Public Library. Susan holds a B.A. from Virginia Tech and an M.L.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She writes about marketing, management, leadership, and libraries at www.658point8.com


Mobile Health Literacy

The Southern Tier Library System, in partnership with local county departments of health, is developing and implementing a mobile health literacy outreach program. This program will be taken to 48 public libraries in five rural counties to assist in training and familiarizing library staff with reliable consumer health online resources provided by the National Library of Medicine. Library staff will then have the tools and information necessary to help educate the public.


Keturah Cappadonia currently works as the Outreach Consultant for the Southern Tier Library System in western New York. She has previously worked as a rural public library director and a children's librarian at a small public library. She is particularly interested in working with small and rural public libraries and enabling them to provide excellent service to the geographically isolated and other traditionally underserved populations. She earned her MLS at the University of Pittsburgh and is an active member of ABOS, ALA, PLA, and the New York Library Association.


Ohh The Places We Will Go!  Library Services Beyond Our Walls

The Houston Public Library's Community Engagement Team prides ourselves in successfully offering programing beyond the walls and meeting customers needs in the places that they eat, sleep, work and play. We currently have a fleet of 5 vehicles (3 specialty) including a mobile computer lab, book mobile, and gaming/puppet theatre used to deploy over 50 programs and services ranging from robotics to circulation on the go! We would love the opportunity to present at the ABOS conference in order to share best practices, lessons learned and more!


MyTesha Tates is the Division Manager for the Houston Public Library’s Outreach and Community Engagement Division, which coordinates and communicates the role of Houston Public Library to the community through positive representation, dynamic programs, and sharing information about all of its services. Known for her innovative leadership style, she infuses technology, fun, and best practices into daily operations of the department for an enhanced customer experience. My’Tesha has a passion to serve and is empowered to do so daily through partnerships with schools, housing authorities, community associations, literacy service provides, parks, churches, City of Houston departments and many others.


Rachel Stout is a Trainer with the Houston Public Library’s Community Engagement Team. She brings her passion for STEM and innovative ideas to CET, where she is a senior member and has provided instruction in STEM subjects and activities since 2008. She has developed or assisted with development of fifteen of CET’s STEM courses, which are primarily offered in underserved communities. She has also developed curriculum for HPL’s Camp STREAM program, beginning with the program’s inaugural year in 2014. She also serves as a lead instructor during Camp STREAM.

You will be surprised how many ingredients you already have on the shelf with which to engage vulnerable, multi-generational populations. Come learn how to customize ideas to suit your palate.


Glenna Godinsky, BA Psychology, University of Iowa, Special Education Paraprofessional, Certified Dementia Practitioner, always relied on library resources for her work. When Glenna’s mom developed Lewy Body Dementia and lived for 4 years with Glenna’s family, support was scarce. Glenna now develops and implements Library Ladies Programming overseeing a volunteer team who provide Tales and Travel Programming across 21 senior/developmental residential/day care communities.

Ana Devine, Director of Branch Services, earned her MLIS degree from Dominican University. Prior to joining Branch Services, she was Library-on-the-Go Manager overseeing outreach activities, including the ReaderShip preschool program, Home Services, and Life Enrichment.


Outreach 101

New to outreach, this is the class for you. When presenter Tracy became the manager of Tulsa City-County Library’s Outreach Services Department, she had no idea what she was in store for. From getting out of the library to attend events, building community partnerships, doing four vehicle projects, and taking services to those unable to visit a library location, the learning curve was steep. Come join her and seasoned bookmobile driver, Jamie Pierson, to learn about the 5Ws & 1H, including some lessons learned, for reaching out into your community.

Tracy Scott, Manager of Literacy, Outreach & Volunteer Services, Tulsa City-County Library, Tulsa, OK. Tracy is a 19-year library veteran that found her place, as the manager of Tulsa City-County Library's Outreach Services Department. She’s always searching for new ways to take the library out into the community.


Jamie Pierson, Bookmobile Driver, Tulsa City-County Library, Tulsa, OK. Jamie has worked as TCCL's Bookmobile Driver for 5 years. Prior to that, she worked with youth, community groups and non-profits in Tulsa, Los Angeles and the Twin Cities. In Outreach Services, she has found a perfect combination of serving the community, promoting literacy, and fun.



Pop Like Its Hot

After years of stagnation, Piedmont Regional Library System’s Outreach Services 2.0 re-launched in January of 2018 with pop-up libraries leading the way. Incorporating Pop-up libraries allowed us to transform our outreach into a mobile branch, bringing 100+ items, library card sign-ups, and the expertise of trained library staff out into the public to serve those who weren't being served within the walls of our traditional library branches. Senior centers, farmer's markets, local festivals...all of these were opportunities to get out and bring the library to the people, and our outreach has never looked back. Let us tell you what we do, what we've learned, and what you can do to make your own services POP.


Kelli McDaniel is an accidental librarian who has worked in public libraries for 13 years. As Assistant Director of the Piedmont Regional Library System, she works with her region's 10 member libraries to coordinate youth services, collection development, and outreach services.


Alicia King, an educator in her previous life, also stumbled into a love of library service and now serves as the PRLS Administrative Assistant and Outreach Coordinator. Together they form the PRLS Outreach team, POPping up at unusual places all across their three county system. If you like energy, enthusiasm, and bulging muscles from hauling heavy library materials from one location to the next, then you’re going to like these ladies.



Story Share Workshop

Story Share is a literacy-based, on-the-go program aimed at adults with dementia and/or special needs. Story Share is based on a simple, adaptable structure which librarians can use for just about any topic or concept to create a fun, flexible, budget-friendly program. We will test out some of the concepts and work together to create some Story Share programs you can use. Plus we will discuss best practices for programming for adults with dementia and/or special needs.

Meredith Anderson is the Outreach Librarian for the Information and Reader Services Department at Geneva Public Library in Geneva, IL. She has an MLIS from Dominican University (River Forest, IL) and a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Aurora University (Aurora, IL). Bringing the library out into the community is her passion.

Laura Nederbragt has never considered herself a Sales Person. “By nature I am a teacher, so as I learn about things, I share that knowledge. I do the same with my customers and most of the time, being helpful and educational is what sells a product. Not being pushy and demanding, at least that isn't how I do things.

Before I worked at Summit, I worked in the Telcom industry doing contract negotiation, and before that a Territory Sales Manager for Telcom. Before that I was a Stay at home Mom while finishing my Business Degree. Folks who work in Outreach work with the public and out in community, and by doing that you are exposed to every type of human being. Sometimes bad but most of the time good. It takes a unique person to be able to work in outreach, and I have so much respect for you. You are also a fun a crazy bunch of folks! Thank you for accepting me into your Community!”

You’ve been educated, informed, and enlightened on how to create and present an educational and entertaining outreach program. But have you ever attended an outreach program yourself? Here is your opportunity. Take a break from the instructional workshops and join me as we journey across the Atlantic Ocean on the RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage from Southhampton to New York. Learn some exciting tips for successful outreach. As the experts say, “The best way to learn something new is to experience it yourself.” Will you survive the journey?


Laurie Osseck is the Adult Outreach Coordinator for Scenic Regional Library in Missouri. Over the past four years, she has visited numerous facilities and created approximately 80 outreach programs on a variety of different topics. Her passion for outreach and the people she serves is immeasurable. If you attended last years’ conference, you may remember her presentation on “Outreach Beyond the Books”. Many of you expressed a desire to see one of her programs, so here is your opportunity. She is looking forward to seeing you again aboard the R.M.S. Titanic.

The purpose of this session is to provide resources and discussion about grieving our patrons. When I began working with older adults and the disabled, I was not prepared for the quantity or depth of loss that I would experience.


The well-known literature on grief does not apply to the situations we find ourselves in. This literature deals primarily with the loss of a family member, not someone you saw for years.


The loss is final but the process is on-going. Everyone is invited to share their experiences and coping tools.


Marcia “Courtney” I have worked for Boise Public Library’s Outreach Services for 16 years. It was my privilege to serve as the ABOS Secretary in 2017 and as an ABOS Board Member at Large from 2015 to 2016. In my life outside of work, I garden, play with my grandchild and have an incorrigible corgi named Boots.
